Windows Phone 7 and Woolworths, NoGo

Since the launch of the iPhone and iPad as well as Google’s Android mobile and tablet platforms there has always been a bit of competitiveness between users comparing cross platform apps or comparing the variety of apps available for one platform to the other.

Which does make it a shame that one of the top supermarket power houses in Australia has sadly left the WP7 platform out in the cold while it indulges in the iPhone and Android marketplace.

Woolworths Hates Windows Phone

Woolworths is one of the largest supermarket chains in Australia with currently only 1 competitor (Coles). Woolworths recently released an app for their stores which allowed users to scan in bar-codes of their groceries and add it to your Shopping List.

This mobile app was originally an iPhone exclusive, which is most typical for major chains to only release applications on the “main-stream” products. This did change after a few weeks with the release of the Android version of the Woolworths app and users around the country rejoiced.

The Letter

There was however 1 operating system which it yet to take a bite of the Woolworths app (WP7). In hopes it was an “Coming Soon” product I put together an email to the Mr Woolworths in hope to get a confirmation of my hopes that Woolworths was coming to WP7.

Sadly this was not the case…..

Woolworths no WP7

Letter from Woolworths that no WP7 is currently planned

With this email shattered my hopes that I would be able to take advantage of my HD7’s great performance and finally upgrade from my “Notes” app which is my current form of a shopping list.

WP7, the issues you face

Its one of the defining moments that any platform faces with regards to its acceptance in the marketplace, as Steve Ballmer would put it, Developers, Developers, Developers….

WP7 has always been facing issues trying to make its mark, but due to the overwhelming support thrown behind some other platforms, WP7 is always left to try and play “catch-up”. Being one of the later entries into the market WP7 has come along way with a lot more planned for the Windows Mobile platform (Mango). Its issues like this which will always leave a scare on its mobile image to the community when companies chose to op-out of developing for a diverse range of platforms.

Woolworths Anti WP7

Woolworths has no plans to launch WP7 app

Now What?

I am a true supporter of WP7 for a number or reasons ranging from the high powered devices to the Xbox integration and I was rather annoyed when Woolworths updated me on the progress for a WP7 app with a “no plans at the moment” generic message.

It seems that the only way we will be able to get this app ported to this great mobile OS is by simply showing that there IS demand for the app.

I would urge anyone with a Windows Phone to get in contact with Woolworths, either using their Contact Us page or via Facebook, because if they see the demand, they might start to notice the section of the market Woolies have overlooked.

Its a shame as Woolworths is trying to make it self appear as the friendly giant through its latest “That’s My Woolies” campaign, yet they completely exile segment of the market they are trying to capture…

One thing is for sure… That’s Not My Woolies…
